For anyone unfamiliar with the U.S.’s Diversity Visa Program, it is a yearly lottery created and run by the U.S. Department of State. Its purpose is to diversify the immigrant population in the United States by granting U.S. permanent residency to the winners selected from all of the eligible entries submitted during that year’s 33-day application period, usually from early October to early November. Did you notice that I said “eligible”? Make sure you only enter once for any individual, because two entries for the same person could disqualify him or her from any chance to win.

In 2025, the government will grant 55,000 permanent resident visas, more commonly known as “Green Cards,” to citizens from countries with low immigration rates to the U.S. In the United States we have individuals from every single country in the world. This lottery program is important because it recognizes that this is who we are and we want to ensure that most people, who are not otherwise inadmissible, can have a fair shot to legally move to the United States, sometimes with qualifying family members, and our society collectively benefits from this.

IMPORTANT: The green card lottery application period runs from 12 pm on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, to 12 pm on Tuesday, November 7, 2023. Try to get your entry submitted earlier than later, as the final days nearly always jam up with heavy traffic, often causing website crashes.

You may be eligible to apply if you are a native of a country with a historically low rate of immigration to the U.S. Despite common belief, an individual who is a native of one of this year’s eligible countries can enter the Green Card Lottery EVEN IF THEY ARE NOT IN THEIR HOME COUNTRY AND EVEN IF THEY ARE IN THE UNITED STATES NOW (and meet other eligibility criteria, of course). The list of eligible countries for this year’s Green Card Lottery is long. Still, unfortunately, it does not include natives from some countries, including Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China (including mainland and Hong Kong-born; Taiwan IS ELIGIBLE), Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, South Korea, Venezuela, and Vietnam.
